Understanding the microbial trends in a nitritation reactor fed with primary settled municipal wastewater

چکیده
Partial nitritation was pointed out as the key step to implement autotrophic nitrogen removal processes at low temperature. This study investigated initiation and maintenance of a process with simultaneous COD in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) run 15 °C fed primary settled urban wastewater characterized by 42 ± 10 mg TOC/L 45 4 NH4+-N/L. A nitrite accumulation ratio nearly 100% observed long-term (354 days) stability successfully maintained despite municipal composition fluctuations. The absence oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity attributed free nitrous acid (FNA) in-situ accumulated high levels (0.02–0.20 HNO2-N/L). Despite nitrate production not observed, quantification bacterial groups indicated that NOB were present SBR sludge throughout entire operational period. Ammonium (AOB) abundance community structure significantly influenced organic matter feeding. Average efficiencies 80% obtained without observing any detrimental effect over performance, due functional redundancy within both chemoheterotrophic AOB communities.

Production of high concentrations of H2O2 in a bioelectrochemical reactor fed with real municipal wastewater.
Bioelectrochemical systems can be used to energy-efficiently produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from wastewater. Organic compounds in the wastewater are oxidized by microorganisms using the anode as electron acceptor. H2O2 is produced by reduction of oxygen on the cathode. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time production of high concentrations of H2O2 production from real municipal was...
متن کاملPerformance and microbial ecology of a nitritation sequencing batch reactor treating high-strength ammonia wastewater
The partial nitrification (PN) performance and the microbial community variations were evaluated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for 172 days, with the stepwise elevation of ammonium concentration. Free ammonia (FA) and low dissolved oxygen inhibition of nitrite-oxidized bacteria (NOB) were used to achieve nitritation in the SBR. During the 172 days operation, the nitrogen loading rate of t...
متن کاملGasification of Municipal Wastewater Primary Sieved Solids in a Rotary Drum Reactor
Municipal sludge contains significant amounts of energy, which can be exploited by the use of anaerobic digestion, combustion or gasification. However, the relatively high moisture content of dewatered biosolids (usually over 80%) and long field experience makes anaerobic digestion the most favourable process for energy production from biosolids. Micro-sieves are novel apparatuses for the remov...
متن کاملMetagenome of the Microbial Community of Anammox Granules in a Nitritation/Anammox Wastewater Treatment System
We sequenced the metagenome of a granular sludge in a nitritation/anammox bioreactor used for the treatment of ammonium-rich wastewater. Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Ignavibacteriae, and Acidobacteria were the predominant phyla in the studied bioreactor. Binning of contigs yielded a near-complete genome of the dominant anammox bacterium assigned to the candidate g...
متن کاملDynamic Performance of UASB Reactor Treating Municipal Wastewater
The simultaneous dynamic equations for substrate and biomass mass were used to assess the UASB reactor performance of municipal wastewater. The dynamic model equations were solved by using a m.file in MATLAB2011a command window and dynamic equations for substrate and biomass. The objectives of this paper are (1) To develop a simple CSTR model for simulation of UASB reactors performance assuming...
